Chamber Orchestra is an advanced performance string ensemble class for students with advanced experience in playing string instruments – violin, viola, cello, and string bass. Members of this ensemble are also in the Symphony Orchestra. The course may be taken in both the fall and spring semesters. There are numerous performance opportunities during each semester, which can include concerts, festivals, and competitions both locally and other locations throughout Southern California.

Intermediate Orchestra is an auditioned ensemble for students who are experienced in playing string instruments – violin, viola, cello and string bass. This class is a mixture of students of all grades. The course may be taken in both the fall and spring semesters with a minimum of two performances per semester.

String Orchestra is an entry-level string class for students with prior experience in playing string instruments – violin, viola, cello and string bass. This class is compromised of mostly 9thgraders, however, students may audition in the spring for the Intermediate or Chamber Ensembles. It is designed to develop both playing and performance skills for the student musician. The course may be taken in both the fall and spring semesters with a minimum of two performances per semester.

Symphony Orchestra is also an advanced performance ensemble, which includes not only the string instrument members of the Chamber Orchestra, but includes selected brass, woodwind and percussion players from Symphonic Winds. This group does not meet as a regular performance class, but meets periodically through the winter and spring.

Every year, the members of the Millikan Performing Arts Department, including the Drama, Choral, Dance and Instrumental Music Departments, combine to perform a Broadway musical production. This annual tradition at Millikan can be traced back to at least the 1960’s, and continues to be a strong performance activity today.
